Visitors to my serviced apartments in South-West London usually manage to squeeze a visit to the West-End into their busy schedules. The trouble is, how do you make the most of it when there is so much to see?
The West-End is a wonderful area to just walk around and get lost – there really is something to see on every street. But if you want to make sure you don’t miss the must-see locations, here are my top five.
Somerset House
Somerset House is a spectacular building on the Thames that’s steeped in history. Nowadays it hosts spectacular fountains in the summer and an ice rink in the winter, as well as huge open-air screenings, theatre, concerts and cultural events. You can also get private tours of secret spaces, and it’s all completely free.
British Museum
There are so many museums to consider in London, but in many ways the British Museum is the most sensible choice if you’re short on time. To put it simply, it’s the UK’s largest museum and one of the oldest – and best – in the world. It boasts collections from every corner of the planet, and the building itself is magnificent.
The National Gallery
The National Gallery is probably the art-lover’s equivalent of the British Museum, with perhaps one of the world’s best collections of seminal European artwork. It covers everything from the 13th to the 20th Century, with more than 2300 pieces on display.
Houses of Parliament
It’s one of the world’s most iconic sights, and the home of UK democracy – so in my view, a quick stop here is a must. It’s sheer size and history is overwhelming, and fabulous guided tours can be booked in advance if you’d like to get a look inside. Otherwise, wander around the circumference and join the queues for that must-have pic in front of Big Ben!
Buckingham Palace
Whether you’re a fan of the Royal family or not, Buckingham Palace is a remarkable piece of British history. Again, guided tours can be pre-booked, but a walk along The Mall from Trafalgar Square is worth the visit alone – as you take in the beauty of St. James’ Park, and then the Victoria Memorial in front of the Palace. Who knows, Her Majesty might even be home!
