If you’re heading to London anytime over the next month or so, you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to getting into the festive spirit. And if you’re a lover of Christmas markets, the capital is the place to be.
From new incarnations to historic spots, we’ve handpicked some of our favourites. Plus, we’ve thrown in a couple of hidden gems right on our doorstep in Surrey if you fancy something just as Christmassy, but a little less busy!
Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park
Now in its 11th year, I can’t recommend this enough. It’s free, has just about everything you could think of from ice skating to an observation wheel, and the market itself is fabulous.
You can find out everything you need to know here, but do plan your trip carefully because this is probably London’s most popular Christmas event.
Kingston Christmas Market
Right on our doorstep at Craven House, Kingston Christmas Market is less busy, but no less fun.
You’ll find fabulous gifts as you pass through the traditional wooden chalets, and the German street food is superb. The Alpine Village is also worth a look, and various workshops are on offer within the local shops.
It runs up until the New Year, and you can find out more here.
Etsy Made Local Christmas Markets
Now, for those who are looking to do some serious market shopping, you might be interested in the Etsy Made Local markets taking place throughout London (for those who are Surrey-based, Richmond and Guildford are your best bets).
Etsy is an online retailer that’s given local makers and artisans a chance to sell their wares at one-off pop-up stalls. I think it’s a wonderful idea for both sellers and buyers, and gives you an opportunity to find some truly unique gifts.
The markets are taking place over the first weekend of December – find your nearest location here.
Portobello Christmas Market
Another one that’s not far from us – and who doesn’t love Portobello Road? It’s unique and charming all year round, and now it comes with a Christmas twist.
Much of it is wonderfully traditional as you might expect, with Santa’s grotto, a hamper and stockings market, and a variety of street performances. It takes place on 9th and 10th December, and everything you need to know is here.
Horniman Christmas Fair
The Horniman Museum is a real hidden gem – a fabulous destination all year round, but one that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.
Well, at Christmas, like many places, it’s even better! On Saturday 16th December you’ll not only be able to browse their fascinating collections, but browse for stocking fillers too. And you can expect plenty of mulled wine and minced pies to keep you warm along the way.
Need somewhere special to stay over the holidays or beyond?
I’m taking bookings through 2018 for my fabulous luxury serviced apartments located by Hampton Court Palace – another must-see destination over the holidays.
So have a look at what’s on offer, and enjoy the festive period whatever you’re up to. And for a full list of London’s Christmas markets, try this – I’ve barely scratched the surface here!
