We love Christmas, here at Craven House. Being on the edge of London and ensconced in the pretty surroundings of Hampton Court and it’s surrounding villages means we get the best of both worlds – big city festivities and local celebrations. The luxury apartments at Craven House make an ideal base for a weekend exploring Surrey and London’s Christmas highlights, so read on for how we’d spend a festive weekend in south west London.

Friday
After checking in, ease into the weekend with lunch at The Prince of Wales in East Molesey. With a festive menu featuring delicious pub favourites, it’s a great way to start the weekend.

Once you’ve fueled yourselves it’s time for some exploring. Bridge Road is the main shopping road in Hampton Court village and is dotted with little boutiques and antique shops. It’s just the spot for any last minute Christmas gift hunting.

Christmas shops on Bridge Road, East Molesey

Once you’ve whiled away a few hours popping in and out of the shops and delis, head across the bridge towards the ice rink in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. Open from late November it’s surely the most unique and scenic location for a festive skate. You’ll need to book ahead but it truly is a magical way to spend the evening. If skating is not on your to-do list then why not head to The Mitre for dinner? Here you have the choice of the 1665 Riverside Brasserie – boasting a menu packed with British classics with seasonal twists or the Coppernose, a more casual setting in the hotels lively bar and lounge area. Throughout December, the Mitre often has special festive menus, exclusive events and is decked out in all its holiday finery.

Saturday

Time to hit the palace! Within walking distance of Craven House, Hampton Court palace is a must-visit. Previously home to Henry VIII you’ll experience traditional Tudor kitchens, and bump into costumed guides sharing stories of feasts and festivities from the Tudor era. The gardens, too, will be dressed in their best Christmas lights. You can enjoy a bite to eat at either the Tiltyard Cafe, a popular spot located in what once was the palace’s tiltyard – home to the jousting tournaments. Or the Fountain Court Cafe serves coffee, pastries and snacks. Don’t miss out on the warm mince pies whichever spot you choose.

London Christmas

Once you’ve got your fill at lunch, it’s time to head towards London to enjoy the wonders of the West End. Hop on the train at Hampton Court station, and you’ll be in London in about 35 minutes. From Waterloo it’s an easy skip over to Covent Garden and the surrounding areas where you’ll find the big theatres and shows. We recommend booking tickets in advance if there’s a specific show you want to see, but if not you can often get good deals at the Today Tix booth in Leicester Square or on their website. You’ll also be treated to some of the best Christmas decorations London has to offer. Covent Garden is known for going all-out through the festive season and the nearby Carnaby Street and Seven Dials area are also famous for their decorations. If you have time before or after your show, definitely take a walk through the pretty streets. There are also plenty of dining options in this area and you’re sure to find something to suit every taste.

Sunday
After a restful night, head out for a Sunday morning walk to take in Surrey’s countryside charm. With Bushy Park and the Thames right on our doorstep you have a wealth of choice when it comes to walks. We also have Richmond Park, Virginia Water, Claremont Landscape Gardens, Wisely and various hikes through the Surrey Hills within a short driving distance.

Craven House - Winter
After stretching your legs it’s time for a traditional Sunday roast – our favourite meal this time of year. There are lots of pubs dotted around but if you’re doing a Bushy Park walk we recommend The Six restaurant – located right by the park. With roaring fireplaces, delicious roast options, and all the trimmings, it’s a proper British pub experience.

Once lunch is all wrapped up, can we recommend some Christmas shopping? If you’ve stayed local for lunch then Kingston-upon-Thames is only a short drive away. The ancient marketplace plays host to a sweet little Christmas village and you’ll find all your usual high street stores bursting with Christmas treats. If you’ve ventured further afield towards Richmond you’ll find a plethora of stores there too.

Kingston MarketThere are many ways to spend a festive weekend in and around Hampton Court and the above is just a starter for inspiration.
