There are lots of people responsible for making Craven House what it is, but none more so than our lovely founder Lucy Schiel. Over the past few years she has worked hard to curate a collection of luxurious, cosy, serviced apartments that are the perfect home-away-from-home, whether you’re on a short staycation or looking for a longer term stay whilst you manage a relocation. This month, we’re getting to know her a bit better.

Who is Lucy Schiel?

I’m a Mum to two crazy teenagers, married to my lovely hubby and together we’ve got a bit of a daft dog who is part of the family. I know how important those furry family members are which is why we are so happy to welcome all your pets to Craven House. It’s important to me that we’re a pet-friendly option for long and short stays and we work hard to be as accommodating as possible.

What inspired you to create the Craven House collection of serviced apartments?

My Mum. She read a newspaper article – 22 years ago now – about luxury serviced apartments. She thought it was a great idea… and here we are!

Which is your favourite apartment and why?

I love the Upper Garden Suite. It has the best, biggest and most comfortable bed – which everyone knows is very important – and the views across Bushy Park are just stunning.

What is your favourite eatery in the area?

I’m not picky about any of the cafe’s on Bridge Street, they’re all great for breakfast, lunch or dinner – and you can even throw a spot of shopping in between the meals too. Not to mention they are only a short stroll away.

How do you ensure a unique and memorable experience for your guests?

It’s really important to us that we offer a personal service with as much attention to detail as possible. We’ll happily stock your fridge using your own shopping list, get in your pet’s favourite food, order special meals… just get in touch with your ideas and requests and we’ll see what we can do.

What’s your favourite thing about the Hampton Court area?

It’s got a village feel with the London vibe. The best of both worlds.

What’s your top travel destination of choice?

I suppose it has to be the snow – anyone who knows me understands how much time I spend skiing. It’s one of my favourite things to do. That being said, you can’t beat a sunny flip flop holiday!

Do you have any funny or interesting stories you can share from your years at Craven House?

I definitely do – but I’m sworn to secrecy on most of them. We did have guests ask us if we would accept pets, only to have them arrive with a parrot, a rabbit, a fish AND a cat… luckily we love it when they bring their pets!

Describe your perfect day spent in the greater London or Surrey area?

A walk around some of the interesting boutiques and antique shops followed by lunch and wine with friends. Lovely.

What time of year do you think is the best to visit Craven House and the surrounding area?

You just can’t beat Spring. Hampton Court Palace Gardens are bursting with life and everyone has a spring (pun intended) in their step. It’s starting to warm up enough for walks along the river or brisk strolls through Bushy Park and nearby Richmond Park and all the flowers are out.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I just love chatting to the guests – they come from all over the world and always have such great stories to tell.

Do you have any ‘local secrets’ or hints and tips to share for Craven House visitors?

Going to the races is always great fun, and with Sandown and Kempton Park on our doorsetp – it’s so easy!

What are you reading at the moment?

Nothing. Although I’ve just finished watching One Day – which was great!

What kind of music do you play at a dinner party?

One thing you should know about me is that I love a good boogie, so some dance-floor-fillers for after dinner are an absolute must!

You just can’t beat a really good Chinese if we’re going out. Otherwise I love a long Sunday roast with friends.

Lucy would be  more than happy to point you in the direction of the best Chinese in the area, share her top tunes of the moment and help out in any other way that she can in preparation for your next stay. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Until then, have a lovely Spring.
