School’s out! Summer holidays are here!

Lucy Schiel August 1, 2017

For family days out in London, Hampton Court Palace offers a bit of everything. As well as being steeped in history, many of the best events and exhibitions take place outside – letting you enjoy some summer sun. So, to keep you and your kids busy, here are a few of my highlights for this summer at Hampton Court Palace – just own the road from Craven House!

Tour the gardens by horse-drawn cart
The Palace has spent a year constructing horse-drawn charabanc carriages that match the luxury of Victorian travel. And this Summer, families can tour the gardens in one, pulled along by two magnificent shire horses. Tickets for kids are just £3, and I think this is the kind of activity that will make their day.

The Luna Cinema
This Summer, a giant screen positioned on the front lawns will allow visitors to watch classic films with the glorious palace as a backdrop. Prices are little more than what you’d pay for an ordinary cinema ticket, and films on show include Jurassic Park.
Saturday Story Time
This is a great freebie if you have any children under the age of 5. On Saturday 29 July and Saturday 26 August, a classic story will be read at different times throughout the day in the heart of the palace. Themed toys will be provided, and it’s completely free. However, you do still need to book to secure a spot.
Henry VIII’s kitchens
I think this is fab. Right until the end of the Summer holidays, a team of historical cooking experts will cook authentic Tudor meals in Henry VIII’s kitchens. These kitchens catered for around 400 people twice a day, and Henry was well-known for his appetite. So I expect this to be a fascinating experience. Again, admission is free – it comes as part of the palace admission fee.

The maze
This isn’t a summer-only offering, but for any families visiting the area, a trip to the palace’s maze is a must. It’s the most famous maze in the world, and the most visited, for good reason. Covering a third of an acre, it continues to confuse and amaze families from all over the world. Admission is free but it gets busy – so get there early!
