We’re big fans of Hampton Court – how could we not be? It’s right on our doorstep, after all. That and it’s a really brilliant day out for the whole family. This former royal residence has enchanted visitors for centuries with its spectacular gardens, its prime location right on the River Thames and its historical significance. Here are a few more reasons you might want to pay it a visit.

Is it worth visiting Hampton Court Palace?

In a word – yes. Hampton Court Palace is one of the most significant and beautiful historical buildings in England. Originally built in the early 16th century, it’s most famously associated with Henry VIII, who brought grandeur and drama to the palace walls. Today, visitors can explore the Tudor kitchens, admire the intricate tapestries in the Great Hall, and walk in the footsteps of kings and queens.

From 10am to 5.30pm (last admission 4.30pm), you can lose yourself in centuries of history. Be sure to take a good long wander through the gardens and famous maze, too – especially glorious in the summer sunshine.

What is there to do in and around Hampton Court Palace?

Beyond the palace gates, the local area offers a blend of heritage charm and modern buzz. Hampton Court Village is home to a lovely selection of independent boutiques, cosy cafes and riverside eateries to keep the foodies happy. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a flat white and then browse for antiques.

Nature lovers should head straight to Bushy Park, just across the road. One of London’s Royal Parks, it’s a vast, peaceful space where you can spot herds of deer, let the kids burn off energy in the playground or enjoy a relaxed stroll through the Water Gardens followed by lunch at the Pheasantry Café.

For cinemas, shopping malls and more, Kingston upon Thames is a short walk or bus ride away and offers shopping, dining and riverside walks in abundance. (We’ve written more about Kingston here.
